Frequently asked questions
Good to know
When does the app launch?
We are working on the first version for iPhone and Android. As soon as the app is in the App Store and on Google Play, you will find the links here. Leave your email address if you want to hear about the launch.
Is the demo on this page the real app?
These are real screens from the app, with sample data. You can tap through them like in the app, but nothing is saved and there is no live map or GPS. Some screens are shown in Dutch; the app itself is fully available in English.
Is EquestrianMaps free?
Yes. The map, scare alerts, navigation and ride statistics are free to use. Premium is an optional monthly or annual subscription for unlimited routes, horses and friends, group rides, the live link, the safety alarm, offline routes and statistics per horse. You will find the current prices in the app.
Does the app work outside the Netherlands and Belgium?
The map, rides and scare alerts work everywhere. Bridleways and official routes come from OpenStreetMap and are most complete in the Netherlands and Belgium. The app is available in English and Dutch.
What happens to my location?
During a ride (ride recording, navigation or a group ride) the app records your precise location, also in the background while the ride is running. If notifications about nearby scare alerts are on, the app also stores an approximate area when you open it, rounded to roughly 1 km, to warn you about new scare alerts nearby. No one else can see that area, and it is deleted as soon as you turn those notifications off. Your location is shared with others only when you start a group ride or live link yourself, or when the safety alarm goes off. Read more in the privacy policy.
Where do the scare alerts come from?
From riders like you. Anyone with the app can report a scare alert; other riders can confirm it is still there. A scare alert expires on its own after a period that fits its type, so the map does not fill up with old reports.
